What feature of the avant-garde do the films Rubber and La Jetee exhibit? How are they different from classical Hollywood movies?

Rubber and La Jatee are different from other classical Hollywood movies for the way they are shot compared to other films, they tend to break the 4th wall a number of times in them. Rubber is a film that I found very different from a standard classical Hollywood film since it wasn’t filmed during classical Hollywood it is a modern Hollywood film. The film broke the forth wall a number of times in more ways than just one as well. There was an audience in the film watching the film from that moment on you can tell its going to be a very interesting film with a number of questionable yet entertaining scenes. I believe films like rubber though I can not think of another film like it are films that really push the creativity in Hollywood films forward by introducing theories and techniques that have never been used before.

I felt as if the La Jetee was just a dull film for someone who is not really used to watching black and white films. Also it wasn’t in a launguage that I could understand and it wasn’t too clear but that is understandable. The film didn’t have any real moving images just black and white photos it didn’t really showcase that

Rubber on the other hand kept me engaged throughout always wondering what was going to happen next. I wouldn’t say its a film to go watch on a date but if you’re into something that’s outrageous then its the film for you. It was a film with an interesting plot about a car tire that becomes serial killer that kills you with lets say his mind. If that doesn’t interest you then don’t watch the film you’ll probably hate it. Because this film will have second guessing it at every point, a good way they do this is by breaking the 4th wall a few times to have you guessing as well.

Avant-garde films in my opinion keep the audience engaged for a certain period of time without getting bored I think it is due to there uniqueness. There aren’t many films like it so most of the time the audience that come to see it tend to be looking for something different or unique and I feel like a person like that will be engaged throughout or at least try to. I also feel like the time of the film matters by this I mean that a film like La Jetee wouldn’t be successful now because it is purely in black and white and no video recording just still images. Other than that I think it would have been a good movie even now. I liked rubber it kept me interested a lot because of the unique story line and how they broke the forth wall a lot the time. You wouldn’t know when they would do it but every now and again they would do it and it would keep me interested because it would happen so unexpectedly. Also it is a film about a tire that kills you with his mind that’s amazing.

  1. Rubber is one of the most original films I’ve ever seen – not sure if it is “good” but it is unforgettable. And a great gimmick for a low budget.

    Thanks for sharing.
