Blade Runner is a film about the future which is ironic since it is based on the time 2019 and we are here in 2020. It is crazy to watch a film based on the future when you are in the future of that film. The film is about robots known as “Replicants” which were used to colonise other planets and they were used as slaves. Until they were declared illegal and a special department in the police force known as blade runners had to dispose of them.
I feel like Blade Runner is a very postmodern text since it shows us a combination of two genres which are sci-fi and one the other one which is film noir that isn’t used in Hollywood much in todays age. The combination of the two really describes the time in Hollywood which could be called a transitional phase where we saw the rise of blockbusters and the fall of classical Hollywood and the studio system.
Blade Runner was a film I found very interesting it had a slow start but it had a lot going on at the same time I guess that should be expected from a sci-fi film. There was also a lot of information you have to remember so you can tell the difference between a human and a replicant, if you are not paying attention you could miss some vital information.
It was a very dark film in terms of lighting with a lot of shadows and it also seemed to rain throughout the film. As for the costumes there wasn’t really anything unique about it other than the scientist in the freezer, who had some sort of special glasses and a massive fluffy coat. The cars looked weird kind of like lego made by a kid. Since the lighting was dark for pretty much the whole film a lot of the set looked the same to me so I can’t really describe the set in any special way because I could barely see it.
The film for me was very unique because I like 80s films but this wasn’t a typical 80s film I would watch. Due to its slow start I struggled to stay engaged but once the film started to pick up the more I got into it. Blade runner is a film that if you are a fan of detective films you will enjoy this, I wouldn’t class it so much as a sci-fi just because it didn’t really give me the feel of a sci-fi film maybe because of the time period. But then again Star Wars was sci-fi film and it gave that feel and it came out before Blade Runner did, maybe I just didn’t enjoy as much as I would have thought.
