Auteur theory is when a director implements parts of their personal beliefs into a film. This is also the director’s artistic vision of the film some directors have recognisable or recurring themes in all their films while others might have it in some of their films and it might not even be a recurring theme.
Spike Lee use auteur in the film school daze where it includes Morehouse College where he studied mass communications. He uses this university in another film called Jungle Fever where he is even spotted wearing a Morehouse College sweater. These are good examples of auteur theory because he uses aspects of his personal life into the film. He also uses stylistic opening and closing credits where he raises awareness for what he believes is poor practices accepted in popular culture like in School Daze he uses images of slaves, living quarters and prominent African American community also in Bamboozled he uses a montage of black face clips and images.
Spike Lee likes to film using a dolly this makes the actor immobile but the setting is in motion which gives you a unique look of what a video that not many other directors use in. Spike Lee does a number of things in a film like a flourish of visuals while still making the narrative move forward at the same time. The way he does it is some mesmerising you could look at it for hours.
I knew writing about Spike Lee on auteur theory would be difficult and it was but I am just a fan of a lot of his movies and documentaries that he has done that I thought it would be criminal to do it on anyone else. I also like that fact that his films tend to have a lot more minorities in them than any other director I could think of like Quentin Tarantino who seems to only pick Samuel L Jackson also I could say the same for Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg who are great directors and love their work but I just want to see a little more diversity for everyone the world would be a much happier place that way.
